The principle of Yoga Therapy and Ayurveda Therapy is to maintain or restore the body’s systems to their normal and efficient functioning by increasing the immunity of the body and strengthening different organs. Pranayama helps to achieve this by:
- Oxygenating the blood
- Exercising the internal organs
- Excreting good hormones and strengthening the nervous system
Pranayama also helps to balance the five elements in the body, there by balancing the three doshas of the body. Practice of Pranayama also balances the Pancha Pranas (five main vayus).
According to yoga master T. Krishnamacharya, Pranayama is an essential healing tool, and becomes even more important in the second half of life. And Dr. Andrew Weil once stated that Pranayama is the key to self-healing. Pranayama is a fundamental yoga therapy technique that can be practiced by people of all ages, healthy as well as ill.
